BJM @ the Orange Peel 4/08/09: Part 2

Ok so long time no post! Anyways– here’s the deal.

On Joel Gion: You would think, well he just plays tambourine, that’s a fucking easy job right? But man it’s way more complex than that.  He’s backup singer/comic relief/metronome/crowd monitor and he’s exceptionally good at all these things.  On top of this he’s got an hilarious stage presence.  A sly jester that one.

On Anton taking it to the next level:  Those that have paid attention to rock and roll history know that Anton is one of several musical geniuses and innovators in sound that took what was started in 60’s era rock and improved upon it.     It must be really cool for him to hear his own influence in music being made right now by The Black Angels and Darker My Love among others.   What’s really great is that he has his shit together now more than ever and is still innovating  — My Bloody Underground and Smoking Acid are cases in point.

The Orange Peel is a non-smoking venue.  It was pretty hilarious that the entire band and crew flipped the bird at that rule and chained smoked the entire time.

Swallowtail left me awe-struck, it was  a great way to end a show.

Here’s the show in it’s entirety.   You can download the zip file of the show in mp3 or flac format below.  Please support these guys by going to see them when they tour and buying their stuff!

The Brian Jonestown Massacre 04/08/09, The Orange Peel, Asheville, NC: Part 1

Comments

The Brian Jonestown Massacre played the Orange Peel this past Wednesday night and I was lucky enough to be there.  I had never seen them before.  It was surreal to finally see them live + alive and well and with their shit together.  And for the record, these guys have their shit together, this was a tight show.

Wednesday night’s experience transformed me into a full fledged BJM advocate.  It left me with the feeling that I’ve got to turn as many kids on to BJM as I can.  In my next post, I’ll tell you why.  It’ll have to do with Joel Gion’s hilarious stage presence, Anton Newcombe taking it to the next level, on stage smoking in a non-smoking venue, Swallowtail, and a heavenly wall of sound.

Head’s up kids.  Here’s a guest post from our man in tha field - David Kinsey. Photo Credits to Irate.

Psych Fest 2 - Austin, TX  March 13th-15th

With a balmy forty-one degree temperature awaiting us, an old friend from Chicago, two new friends from Florida, and myself, arrived in Austin, and it was obvious there was something different in the air for the weekend.  Having never been to Austin, we decided to walk down 6th street, starting near the Radio Room with our final destination being Waterloo Records, stopping off at a few places for drinks and food along the way there and back.  The weather may have had an impact on how crowded the streets were, but there was definitely a really cool vibe everywhere we went, as the establishments seemed to be preparing during the calm before the storm, which will be SXSW.  After a few hours of trying as many local/Texan brewed beers as we could, it was time to head into Radio Room. The Vega Star - The Night

I’ve spent a week listening to this and I’m still not sure I can come up with the words to do the album any justice…. but I have tell you about it.  It is  dreary, sad, and beautiful.  The music The Vega Star creates doesn’t sound like the blues but it does as much for the spirit as a good blues album.  If you’ve gotten yourself in a place of quiet desperation then you’re not alone.  You have a friend in The Vega Star.  One of the best albums I’ve listened to in 2009.

Invade Rome - Light Eyed and Villainous

Comments

Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based four-piece Invade Rome released their debut full-length album, Light Eyed & Villainous, on January 6th, 2009 on their very own VTK Music label. This collection was produced, recorded and mixed by Beau Sorenson (Sparklehorse, Death Cab for Cutie), who also worked on several other projects with the band in earlier years. Recorded at the storied Butch Vig-owned Smart Studios in Madison, WI , Light Eyed & Villainous is a perfect reflection of the background of its artists.

Originally starting together in 2003, Invade Rome have worked through many hardships, grueling tour schedules and even a band change to put together this set of songs. Refusing to be pigeonholed as simply “stoner-rock,” the band spent the last two years working very hard to develop their own unique take on classic, psychedelic rock n’ roll.

Invade Rome have been building momentum through spirited live performances, recently sharing the stage with the Secret Machines, the Dears, Dead Confederate, Colour Revolt and De Novo Dahl.

Invade Rome will be touring in early spring of ‘09, after returning from SXSW and plan to release a follow-up EP and 7″ shortly thereafter.
